5 Options to Update Your Facebook Page Status

By Lisa Nelson  |  Social Media

Do you have a Facebook business page, but not sure what you should be posting?

The goal with Facebook is to be active on a regular basis so you stay in your “fans” newsfeed. This means they will see you frequently, be reminder of the services you offer and remain aware of your area of expertise.

But what do you share?

Here are 5 options you could alternate to update your Facebook page status regularly so you stay in your “fans” newsfeed:

1. Current events/information

If you read an article you like and think your target market would like, share a comment and post a link to it on Facebook.

2. Link to articles you write yourself and post on your blog

We do this for you as part of the content marketing package.

3. Post an occasional question

This is to try and generate discussion.

4. Provide a quick tip that links to nothing

You don’t want to be seen as constantly promote. Tips with no strings attached are good.

5. Periodic promo pieces

Such as a note and link to a product, service, or free offer you provide

Ideally you want to be interacting on Facebook via your business/fan page, not your personal page. So, if you have a lot of personal “friends” that are actually business associates, you may want to invite them over to your business page. You could also put a note periodically on your personal profile wall reminding friends to join you on your business page.

If you have found another form of interacting to be effective for communicating with Facebook fans, please take a moment to share it below!

All the best,
Lisa Nelson

    H, Lisa.

Thanks for the valuable tips. I’d like to expand on # 3 “Post an occasional question”:

The question does not need to be business related. It can be as simple as What is your favorite movie? Word the question in such a way as to invite participation and avoid simple “yes” or “no” answers.
The purpose of asking a question is to stimulate conversation with your followers.

    Thanks again,
    Darrell

Here’s a good tip shared by Nanette Saucier on LinkedIn:

“Also, books that we recommend for reading.”

Thanks for the tips. I do #4 quite a lot as a quick way to update, but I need to do more of promoting my business/service. How much do you do it though, without people feeling you are too much in their face?

You do want to keep promotion subtle on social media. I like to tie it in to blog posts most of the time, meaning you share a tip, link to a blog post, and your blog post leads readers to a product or invitation to sign up for a free report (or some other freebie in exchange for their name/email). However, you do want to be more direct, particularly if you are launching a new service or holding a special sale. If someone you are connected to really wants your product, you’d be doing them a dis-service to not let them know you are holding a sale or launching a new service that may be just right for them. Another subtle way to promote is to share a case study. . .if you have a client with great results aren’t you excited to share with others? Keep it genuine.

Thanks for sharing Lisa. There are some good ideas here.

I’d like to know more about how you actually get people onto your FB page. The people who have found mine really enjoy it, but it is difficult to get people to actually find it, particularly if you have other places to direct them to in order to connect or follow such as Twitter, Google +, your own website etc.

    Hi Beth,

The main way I promote my Facebook page is through my newsletter and website with links to the page included in each. Then I also regularly update my page with content so if anyone is searching for a particular topic I provide information on my page will come up in the results. I also find many “likes” come from attending live conferences as a way to stay connected with those I’ve met in person and also as a way to stay connected with those I may correspond with in a virtual group. I do know some people put their Facebook url on their business cards, but this is not something I’ve done. Anyone else have suggestions on how you draw traffic/likes to your page? I know contests can be effective, but I haven’t played with this option. . .
