Let’s say you are hosting a teleclass and you are pulling out all the stops when it comes to marketing. You’ve outlined a complete marketing plan that includes promotion to your list, blog, social media, event listing sites, and more.
Whether the marketing requires a financial investment on your part (you pay a VA to do it for you) or you invest the time yourself to send out marketing messages it’s important to identify which marketing methods were effective and which were not.
This way the next time you host a teleclass you know what was worth your time or what you need to tweak for a better response the next time around. . . and maybe what you need to complete delete from the marketing plan in the future.
Event Tracking Tools
Tracking your marketing results in regards to an event is quite simple, it just requires a little preparation and organization on your part.
First, identify the web page where you will be sending traffic, such as http://yourwebsite.com/teleclass
Second, list where you will be promoting your event. Here’s an example list:
1. Newsletter
2. Solo mailing
3. Blog posts
4. Twitter
5. Facebook
6. LinkedIn
Third, create unique tracking links that will be exclusive to each of the above marketing streams. How?
If you have a service like 1shoppingcart you have the ability to create tracking links, but my favorite option is to use budurl.com. . . and it’s free.
Create Your Tracking Links
For this example, we’ll go to budurl.com and add six new BudURL’s. Each time the “large url” will be your landing page as identified above – http://yourwebsite.com/teleclass. Each “Custom Alias” will be dependent on what you pick to identify the different marketing avenue. Here’s what I mean for this example:
1. http://budurl.com/newsletter
2. http://budurl.com/solo
3. http://budurl.com/blog
4. http://budurl.com/twitter
5. http://budurl.com/facebook
6. http://budurl.com/linkedin
When any of the above links are clicked traffic is directed to your landing page and budurl tracks how many times each link is clicked. This means after your event is over you can go back to budurl and see how many people were sent to your landing page from facebook, your newsletter, your blog, etc.
Use the Links Correctly
However, this only works if you make sure you use the specified links in the appropriate location. If you want to track your event traffic from Facebook then be sure you use the Facebook tracking link when posting about your event on Facebook. The same applies to all other marketing avenues you use. Depending on your list management service, you may or may not need to create a tracking link for your newsletter and solo mailings.

BudURL.com use to be my choice for creating tracking links. However, they started charging for their service and I prefer to keep overhead costs minimal if at all possible. So, I currently use ClickMeter.com to create tracking links.
